Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Behavior/Academic Difficulties >> Healthy Performance
ADHD can affect children, adolescents, and adults. The inability to concentrate and focus can create multiple problems at school, work or home. People struggling with ADHD have sometimes been called “lazy”, “unmotivated”, or perceived as not caring about things. These statements can have an impact on one’s self-esteem and desire to do well. Over time, one may start to believe these comments and no longer set goals for themselves. Children often wonder why they can’t do certain things but seem to excel in other things. It is certainly confusing. Adults can also experience the same problems if they have not learned how to manage and compensate for what is happening with them.
Sometimes children struggle with academic progress and/or behavior problems for reasons other than ADHD. The most important thing in helping your child is getting a clear picture of the problem. What appears to be happening at the surface may not actually be the entire story.
At PsychArizona, we will start with a thorough assessment. That may include a psychoeducational assessment that will assess achievement, ability, motor skills, ADHD, and some neuropsychological functioning. It may include coordinating with the school to collect behavioral data or teacher feedback. Referrals may be given to you for other specialized assessment such as in-depth neuropsychological assessment, speech, hearing, or occupational assessment. We will discuss and determine together what is needed. Once there is a clear picture of what the problems are, then a plan of action will be discussed and implemented. This may include special services at school, new parenting strategies, behavior intervention methods, or learning compensatory behaviors to increase attention and focus.
