Post-Partum Depression

After giving birth, the mother experiences hormonal shifts. In addition to the hormonal changes, the mother’s body is changing from pregnancy and delivery. There are sleepless nights and multiple life changes. With these changes, it is common to have mood swings and “baby blues”. This is normal. If the “baby blues” do not go away in a couple of weeks and the feelings of depression seem to intensify, you may be experiencing post-partum depression. Symptoms include guilt, feeling worthless, disconnected and agitated. More severe symptoms include thoughts about harming the baby or being afraid to be alone with the baby.

Counseling can help reduce many symptoms of post-partum depression. At PsychArizona, we will help you with learning strategies to reduce depressive symptoms, develop a support system, and adjust to the many life changes.
